KALLAX Shelf Unit Review: The Most Versatile Storage Cube You Can Buy
IKEA's KALLAX has been a bestseller for years. But is it still the best modular storage option for home improvement? We put it to the test.

Verdict: The IKEA KALLAX shelf unit remains the most flexible, value-for-money modular storage system available for home use. Minor limitations in material quality are far outweighed by its price, adaptability, and the breadth of compatible accessories.

Overview
The IKEA KALLAX shelf unit is one of the most recognisable pieces of flat-pack furniture in the world, and with good reason. Available in configurations from a single 1×1 cube to the sprawling 5×5 grid, it functions equally well as a media console, room divider, children's toy storage, bookcase, or entryway organiser.
Its success is partly down to timing — KALLAX launched as a replacement for the discontinued EXPEDIT range in 2014 — but mostly down to its combination of a universal cube size (33cm square) and an ever-expanding accessory ecosystem that lets owners endlessly customise the unit years after purchase.
We've been using a 2×4 unit in an office/study and a 4×4 unit in a living room for over two years. Here's an honest account of what holds up and what doesn't.
Assembly
Flat-pack furniture assembly is rarely anyone's favourite activity, but KALLAX is better than most. IKEA's instruction booklet uses clear illustrations with minimal text. For a 2×4 unit, two reasonably capable adults can complete assembly in 30–45 minutes. Solo assembly of the same unit takes around an hour and requires some creativity during panel alignment.
A few assembly tips:
- Lay panels on carpet or a blanket — assembling on hard flooring risks scuffing the foil surface
- Do not fully tighten cam locks until all panels are connected — overtightening early makes alignment adjustments very difficult
- Check squareness before the back panel goes on — the backing sheet corrects small racking but can't fix large misalignment once fitted
- Two people for the back panel — it's fiddly solo and bent backing panels are the most common damage during assembly
Assembly score: 4/5 — clearer than most flat-pack, but the back panel stapling step is genuinely awkward.
Build Quality
Let's be honest about what KALLAX is: particleboard with a foil or lacquered surface. This is not solid wood furniture, and it shouldn't be compared to it at this price point. The question is whether the particleboard construction does the job reliably over time — and the answer is largely yes, with a few caveats.
What holds up well
- Structural rigidity when wall-anchored is excellent — the unit doesn't rack or lean with typical shelf loads
- Surface durability on the lacquered colours (black-brown, white) is good; resistance to water rings and minor scratches is reasonable
- Shelf load capacity of approximately 13kg per shelf is adequate for books, décor, light electronics
What doesn't
- Foil-finish surfaces (particularly the wood-effect variants) are more susceptible to peeling at edges and corners under heavy use
- The back panel is notably thin — a hardboard-weight material stapled into a rebate. It keeps things on the shelves but offers little rigidity on its own
- Heavy, uneven loading — stacking heavy items on upper shelves without wall-anchoring can cause visible forward lean. Always anchor to wall for any unit taller than 1 row
Build quality score: 3.5/5 — fit for purpose at the price, but not heirloom furniture.
Versatility
This is KALLAX's strongest suit, and the main reason it continues to outsell alternatives. The accessory range is extensive and genuinely transforms the unit:
KALLAX insert options:
- Door insert (push-open) — clean close for hiding clutter
- Shelf insert — creates two half-height compartments from one full cube
- 2-drawer insert — the most popular, particularly for bedroom and office use
- Basket inserts (DRONA, KNIPSA) — fabric baskets that fit the cube perfectly; available in a wide range of colours
Beyond the accessories, the KALLAX adapts to use-case in ways few competitors can:
- Horizontal as TV bench — two 1×4 units stacked form a low media unit with flexible storage
- Room divider — a 4×4 or 5×5 unit placed in the middle of a room acts as a partition with display space on both sides
- Work desk — two 2×4 units with a desktop spanning across them creates a solid, storage-packed desk setup
- Entryway storage — a single 1×4 unit on its side with a shoe storage insert and cushion on top works as combined seating and shoe storage
Versatility score: 5/5 — genuinely unmatched in this price range.
Value
At its price point, the KALLAX has no credible competitor. The unit's structural quality is sufficient; the surface finish is reasonable; and the accessory ecosystem adds significant long-term value because you can add to and reconfigure the system over time rather than replacing it.
The total cost of ownership is further reduced by IKEA's spare parts and replacement panel service — individual damaged panels can be ordered cheaply, unlike most flat-pack furniture where one damaged component means replacing the entire unit.
Value score: 5/5
Who Should Buy the KALLAX
Buy it if you:
- Need modular, reconfigurable storage
- Want a system you can expand or adapt over time
- Are furnishing a room on a tight budget
- Have children (the cube format is ideal for toy and book storage)
Consider alternatives if you:
- Need to support very heavy loads (over 10kg per shelf consistently)
- Want visible wood grain and a more premium aesthetic — look at solid wood alternatives in the £300–600 range
- Are planning a very large floor-to-ceiling installation — bespoke shelving becomes more cost-effective at significant scale
Final Verdict
| Category | Score | | ------------- | --------- | | Assembly | 4/5 | | Build Quality | 3.5/5 | | Versatility | 5/5 | | Value | 5/5 | | Overall | 4.5/5 |
The KALLAX is not the most premium storage solution, but it might be the most sensible. Its weaknesses are transparent and predictable; its strengths — modularity, price, and accessory breadth — are genuine and lasting. For most homes, it remains the right choice.
