How to Install a Ceiling Light Fixture
A step-by-step guide to safely replacing or installing a ceiling light fixture. Covers switching off the circuit, wiring connections, mounting the bracket, and final testing — no licensed electrician required for a like-for-like swap in most jurisdictions.
Turn Off Power at the Breaker
Locate your home's electrical panel and switch off the circuit breaker for the room. Use a non-contact voltage tester on the existing fixture wires to confirm the power is off before touching anything.
Remove the Old Fixture
Unscrew the canopy covering the junction box. Carefully lower the old fixture and note how the wires are connected (take a photo). Disconnect the wire nuts.
Inspect the Junction Box
Check that the junction box is rated to support the weight of your new fixture. If it is a fan-rated or heavy fixture (over 22 kg), replace the box with a rated brace-mounted box.
Install the Mounting Bracket
Attach the new mounting bracket to the junction box using the hardware supplied with your fixture. Most modern fixtures include an adjustable crossbar.
Connect the Wires
Connect black (live) to black, white (neutral) to white, and the bare copper or green wire to the ground screw or green lead. Secure with wire nuts and wrap with electrical tape.
Mount the Fixture and Restore Power
Tuck the wires into the box, press the canopy against the ceiling, and tighten the mounting screws. Install bulbs, restore power at the breaker, and test.
